catch up

recent events

who: me, him, best friends, etc.
what: digable planets
when: thursday, november 13th
where: 2410 n. mississippi

synopsis: the buddy ryan aka rev. shines (http://www.myspace.com/shinelaguage) opened up the sold-out show. the venue left much to be desired: the stage height is rediculously low, leaving most with little to no view, the bar lines were STUPID long and the bar itself was inadequately stocked and staffed (to say the least). [ir]regardless of these shortcomings, the show was a good time had by all. most portland fans who haven't already caught them in the act probably thought they had missed their chance...considering they have been off the map for quite some time. Butterfly, Doodlebug and Ladybug did not disappoint and served up a high-energy, nostalgia-enducing performance. it was an important moment in portland's hip hop.

*on a personal note, my crush on Butterfly was seriously rediscovered. seriously.

who: me + him
what: saturday market
when: sunday, november 16th
where: downtown, under the burnside bridge

synopsis: yes, we went to saturday market on a sunday. don't get boxed in by the name, its really a weekend market. anyways, it was a gorgeous day...perfect actually. it started off with my last day at a miserable job that ended early enough to enjoy the peak of the beautiful weather by walking down waterfront en route to one of my favorite places in my favorite city. for a people-watcher/lover and a people-watcher/cynic it is a dream: an abundance of highly-varied personalities, styles, pets, [pseudo] talents, etc. that being said, the strolling was uninspired and the market as a whole was fairly underwhelming. sort of an eventless outing. and then...MAGIC. the most amazingly hilarious/tragic/confusing/pathetic/stimulating incident occurred. the written word will not suffice. spoken word probably wouldn't either. only those few surveyors, including the two of us, will truly understand and appreciate what happened that day. a truly grand moment. this was followed by lunch/dinner at the oyster bar (208 sw ankeny) which included excellent oyster crackers, suprisingly good raw oysters, respectable clam chowder and a serious battle between us and a mean...no, cruel bloody mary (two, actually). the drinks were finished but somehow i still feel like mary won.

who: me, mama, baby sister
what: the boy in the striped pajamas
when: sunday, november 16th
where: fox tower

synopsis: a heart-breaking story about a young boy living in the core of nazi terrorism. he is the eight year old son of a nazi general who befriends a jewish boy living in a concentration camp near his home. while it is a well-made film, its no schindler's list (which i was saddened to learn my sister has yet to see). now, i understand that this is an unfair and obvious comparison to make but i nonetheless find it important to make note of. the film speaks to innocence and hypocrisy while highlighting the terrifying capabilities of common men. definitely worth checking out.

thats all for now.
stay tuned.
